Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an effective process of fertilizing the eggs in a lab after retrieving eggs from a woman’s body. It works well for couples dealing with male factor infertility andmakes use of special equipment to select sperms and injecting a single, tiny sperm directly into an egg. ICSI can help couples overcome several problems that may be hindering or affecting a couple’s chances of pregnancy.

  • Some of the common cases where ICSI is recommended when there is low sperm count, poor sperm motility or morphology, complete absence of sperm, blockage or irreversible vasectomy, inability of sperm to penetrate the egg, previously failed IVF cycles, ejaculatory dysfunction caused by retrograde ejaculation or in testicular cancer patients who have had semen sample frozen before treatment.
  • The success of ICSI depends on the egg quality and quantity since the procedure is usually conducted in cases of male infertility problems. When performed along with IVF, the success of ICSI depends on several factors such as the ICSI technique being used, the skill level of the person performing the procedure, the individual patient’s own healthand the quality of services at the clinic.
